Arun Gandhi
Our late Arun Gandhi (1934 – 2023), the grandson of India’s late spiritual non-violent leader, Mahatma Gandhi, dedicated his life to following in his grandfather’s footsteps.
In The Truth, The Journey Within film, Dr. Arun Gandhi shares hard-won wisdom from a childhood steeped in the crucible of brutal racial injustice in South Africa, which led him at age 12 to spend 18 life-transforming months under the tutelage of his grandfather, the legendary Mahatma Gandhi. Suffering savage beatings as a young teen for looking different from both white and black youths, Arun’s parents hoped concentrated time with his grandfather would help him process the resulting traumas and volcanic anger through nonviolent, spiritual means.
At 13, when Gandhi instructed Arun to write down every fleeting judgmental thought on the ashram wall over months until filled completely, this profound self-inquiry provoked a radical shift – setting Arun on the lifelong path towards compassion and unity. Later co-founding India’s Center for Social Unity, his legacy spearheads economic initiatives benefiting 500,000 rural citizens, furthering his grandfather’s spiritual legacy to uplift all people. His work immortalizes Gandhi’s timeless urging: “If we are to teach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with the children.”

While Mahatma Gandhi imparted timeless wisdom to his grandson Arun over pivotal months, the teen was also witnessing history unfold during India’s struggle for independence. These twin influences – his grandfather’s spiritual mentoring and the swirling sociopolitical climate – set Arun on a course committed to nonviolent service.
Later founding the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence in Memphis, he examined, promoted, and applied his grandfather’s principles through research, workshops, and community programs. Arun also shares the transformative power of compassion he learned at Gandhi’s feet in The Truth, The Journey Within film. There has never been a more pivotal time when Gandhi’s wisdom “Be the change you wish to see in the world” has become our living mantra.
